Construction progress continues on Little Pine Island Bridge while efforts focus on easing congestion to and from Matlacha

MATLACHA – Traffic volumes continue to increase for motorists traveling to and from Matlacha Island, particularly during peak season, as visitors and residents frequent local businesses and pedestrian activity rises. Additional delays are also occurring due to ongoing drawbridge work being conducted by Lee County. The Florida Department of Transportation is actively monitoring traffic conditions along the Pine Island Causeway corridor. At this time, there are no scheduled daytime lane closures on the Little Pine Island Bridge associated with the bridge reconstruction project. Free art class available for island home school students

In a lead-up to the Calusa Land Trust’s StoryWalk at the Wigert-Barron Preserve in April, CLT has partnered with Pine Island artist Zan Lombardo and the Beacon of Hope to sponsor free art education classes.   On three consecutive Mondays starting March 16, Lombardo will guide students in creating papier mache baby gopher tortoises.  This program is focused on home school students in grades 5-8, although younger students can attend with an adult present.  Students will have real artifacts and artist creations from Lombardo to examine. Celebration of life set for former state attorney Joseph P. D’Alessandro

Services have been scheduled for Joseph P. D’Alessandro, the first state attorney for Florida’s 20th Judicial Circuit. A Fort Myers native who went on to serve in the office for more than three decades, D’Alessandro, 86, died on Feb. 16 following a brief illness. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection in Fort Myers. When the Florida Legislature created the 20th Judicial Circuit in 1969, Gov. Claude Kirk appointed D’Alessandro to serve as its first lead prosecutor.
