Greater Pine Island Civic Association Seeks New Board Members
Did you know that the Greater Pine Island Civic Association is the longest-running civic group on Pine Island? The GPICA was created in 1957, and as a 501(c)4, serves as a voice for residents, advocating for the health, safety and quality of life in the community.
The GPICA currently has several openings on its governing board and is seeking new Board Member nominations to fill these slots.
The GPICA is an all-volunteer organization and its membership helps to ensure that local community residents have a say in development, growth, zoning, water quality and other issues affecting our islands. The GPICA Board sets the organization’s agenda and carries out its organizational mission. Full or part-time residents and property owners from all of the island’s communities — including Matlacha Isles, Matlacha, Pine Island Center, St. James City, Pineland and Bokeelia — are welcome to join the organization.
The GPICA has been working for 67 years to preserve and maintain a desirable, livable community that promotes smart growth and preserves sensitive natural areas by working with Island residents to develop the future land-use plan — today commonly called the Pine Island Plan — that is implemented through the Lee County Development Code.
Today, the GPICA continues its advocacy by raising issues important to local residents with lawmakers at the local and state levels. It regularly addresses environmental, road/traffic and water quality issues and, after Hurricane Ian, helped to bring awareness of the community’s needs to county staff and groups working on hurricane recovery.
You can learn more about the GPICA and its activities by visiting www.GPICA.org and attending our general meetings, which typically take place on the first Tuesday of every month at the First Baptist Church of Pine Island. GPICA also livestreams their monthly meetings on Facebook.
