Voting begins for April Athlete of the Month

Voting for the Cape Coral Breeze Athlete of the Month for April is now open.     

The Breeze had countless top performances from student-athletes in its coverage area throughout April and now it’s up to readers to decide who will earn top honors for the month.    

Nominees for April include: 

• Erin Vezzola, senior, Oasis Sharks: The senior finished first in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles at the North Port Invitational. 

• Romero Gist, senior, Mariner Tritons: Gist had a monster night at bat, driving in seven Triton runs. Gist was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple, scoring four times. The senior is batting .404 on the year with 22 RBI. 

• Nate Jaquez, sophomore, Island Coast Gators: The sophomore helped the Gators (20-2) to a trio of wins for the week, ripping three doubles, driving in three, and scoring four runs. Jaquez was batting .490 on the year 10 RBI and 21 runs scored. 

• Kaliyah Williams, senior, North Fort Myers Red Knights: The senior came up big on the mound and the plate for the Red Knights in a win over Riverdale. Williams held the Raiders to two hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters. Williams also homered twice, driving in three runs. 

• Gabi Winters, junior, Mariner Tritons: The junior helped lead the Tritons to two wins for the week. She homered, scored three runs and drove in five in a win over Bonita Springs, and allowed two hits and no walks with 13 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout versus Ida Baker. 

• Payton Breadmore, senior, Bishop Verot Vikings: Breadmore and teammate Paige Bettermann combined on a six-inning no-hit, no-walk performance against Miami Schoolhouse Prep. Breadmore also had three hits including a home run, driving in three runs.

• Jocelyn Slater, sophomore, Cape Coral Seahawks: Slater had three hits including a home run, and drove in four runs for the Seahawks in an LCAC Tournament win over Fort Myers. She also collected three hits and two RBI in a win over Island Coast. 

• Yadel Pena, senior, Ida Baker Bulldogs: The senior had two doubles and a single, driving in four runs for the Bulldogs  helping them capture the District 6A-13 Championship in a 9-0 win over Gateway. 

• Jazlyn Forbes, senior, Oasis Sharks: The senior was a District 2A-12 champion in three different events for the Sharks, winning the 1600-meter, 3200-meter and was part of the first-place 4×800-meter relay.

• Austin Schoolcraft, senior, Island Coast Gators: The senior helped the Gators to a 10-0 win over Countryside in a state regional matchup. He went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.  

Athlete of the Month nominees are comprised of the Breeze’s staff-selected Athletes of the Week for that respective month.
