CLT participates in Pine Island Elementary STEM event
To the editor:
The Calusa Land Trust was invited to participate in PIE’s first ever STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Event on Dec. 19 for an hour in the evening. We were delighted to share information about gopher tortoises as a keystone species on our preserves. Students could touch a tortoise carapace and learn about all the other animals, reptiles and insects that can live in a gopher tortoise burrow. Students learned about not stepping on the sandy area in front of the burrow because that’s where gophers lay their eggs. Families also were invited to attend the Calusa Land Trust’s launch of a StoryWalk on gopher tortoises to be held at the Wigert-Barron Preserve in Bokeelia on April 11 at 9 am.
We wish to thank Pine Island Elementary and specifically teacher Regina Notarianni for including the Calusa Land Trust in this exciting event.
