Lee County Department of Transportation Roadwatch Update — Feb. 5 to Feb. 11

1. Road Work/Maintenance/Improvement

Corkscrew Road Widening Project – Phase 2 Construction Project: The project constructs four, 11-foot-wide travel lanes from Bella Terra Boulevard to just east of Alico Road, and a new traffic signal at the Alico Road intersection. Also included are on-road bike lanes in each direction, a 10-foot-wide shared-use path on the south side of the road, a 6-foot sidewalk on the north side of the road, and street lighting. The 22-foot wide (varies) median includes various hardwood and palm trees as well as shrubs.

Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the work zone.

• Crews are installing sewer force main throughout the project.

• Crews will be installing drainage throughout the project area on Corkscrew Road and Alico Road. Motorists should expect trucks and equipment to be moving materials throughout the project.

• Motorists should drive with caution and expect intermittent daytime flagging as road crews are performing earthwork up to the shoulders of the road on Corkscrew Road and Alico Road, within the project limits. Please be aware that trucks may be entering and leaving the roadway.

• Crews will be installing utility conduits, light pole bases and light poles on the south side of Corkscrew Road from Wayside Lane to Alico Road.

• Sidewalks are closed in areas throughout the project as the contractor performs underground work.

The work activities above are scheduled to occur, however unforeseen underground conditions and weather may affect this schedule.

Please use caution and watch for workers and construction vehicles entering and leaving the roadway. Due to additional work required by Lee County Utilities, as well as delays in utility relocations by FPL and Lumen, the project completion is expected end of 2026. Village of Estero Corkscrew Road Shared Use Path Project: This Village of Estero project constructs a 10-foot-wide asphalt pathway on the north side of Corkscrew Road from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Palermo Lake Court (eastern entrance of Grandezza), and 6-foot wide concrete sidewalk from east of Palermo Lake Court that connects to the sidewalk that runs to Midnight Blue Court (Wild Blue Vista) built by Lee County’s previous widening project. The 10-foot-wide asphalt pathway will also be constructed on the south side of Corkscrew Road from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Bella Terra Boulevard. Roadway and pathway lighting similar to those on Estero Parkway will be installed to complement the new facilities, along with a substantial amount of landscaping and irrigation which will add to the beautification of the Corkscrew Road corridor.

The sidewalk and pathway are active work zones and remain closed to pedestrians and bicyclists from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Midnight Blue Court/Bella Terra Boulevard.

• Crews are installing sod on the south side of the road between Cypress Shadows Boulevard (The Preserve at Corkscrew) and Bella Terra Boulevard. Please be aware of trucks and equipment entering/leaving the roadway.

• Crews are installing irrigation in the median. Lane closures are not scheduled for this work. Please be aware of trucks and equipment entering/leaving the roadway.

• Crews are grading on the north side of the road between Ben Hill Griffin Parkway and Grande Oaks Boulevard. Please be aware of trucks and equipment entering/leaving the roadway.

• WORK BY UTILITY COMPANIES: Various utilities are relocating utilities throughout the project. This work may require daytime lane closures within the project area.

The work activities above are scheduled to occur, however unforeseen underground conditions and weather may affect this schedule.

Please use caution and watch for workers and construction vehicles entering and leaving the roadway. Estimated completion is Fall 2026. Project cost is approximately $23 million, including $4.6 million for landscaping and irrigation and $4 million for lighting. Big Carlos Pass Bridge Project – Construction Project: The project builds a new bridge over Big Carlos Pass, from Estrellita Drive on Fort Myers Beach to the Lovers Key State Park bayside entrance on Lovers Key. The new bridge will replace the existing moveable bridge over Big Carlos Pass with a fixed span bridge that will provide a vertical navigation clearance of 60 feet. The new bridge will be constructed on the Gulf side of the existing bridge, and will include one travel lane in each direction, bicycle lanes, a six-foot-wide sidewalk along the north side of Estero Boulevard, and a 10-foot-wide shared use path along the south side of Estero Boulevard. A parking area with access to the Lovers Key State Park will be included on the southeast side of the bridge. The project also includes relocation of existing infrastructure for Lee County Utilities and Bonita Springs Utilities.

Boaters are reminded to avoid the construction equipment and the temporary trestle that is in the water.

Mariners are now using the navigational channel under the new bridge.

A temporary clearance gauge is available.

FISHING IS NOT PERMITTED FROM THE BIG CARLOS PASS BRIDGE

• During the nighttime/overnight hours of 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM on Friday, February 6,2026, motorists should expect a lane closure with a flagging operation for crews to pour bridge deck on span 1 (closest to Fort Myers Beach).

• Vehicles are now using the newly constructed, fixed-span bridge. LeeTran trolley stops on the east side of the bridge are open for service. Pedestrian and bicyclist access is limited until the completion of span 1 (closest to Fort Myers Beach).

• Motorists should continue to expect intermittent daytime lane closures with flagging for crews to perform utility and bridge work.

• Crews continue construction on the west side of the new bridge. Due to this work, the east entrance of Islands End (south side) is closed. Access will be maintained at the west entrance. Islands End driveway (north side) is shifted slightly to the west.

• The contractor is dismantling the old bridge, as well as removing the temporary trestle from the water.

• The contractor is performing concrete work throughout the job including installing curb, pedestrian railing, and sidewalk. Delivery is occurring during times that are favorable for successful pours and within permit requirements.

• Pedestrians should follow signs to use the sidewalk on the south side of the bridge.

• Crews will continue performing earthwork and drainage work throughout the project.

TRESPASSING INTO THE CONSTRUCTION SITE IS DANGEROUS AND ILLEGAL.

THIS INCLUDES THE BEACH AREA UNDER THE BRIDGE.

Pedestrians and boaters are reminded to please stay out of the work zone.

Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the work zone as workers and construction vehicles are entering and leaving the roadway. Motorists should expect reduced speeds throughout the project area. Draw bridge will remain in operation during construction and motorists should be prepared to stop. Fishing is not permitted from the Big Carlos Pass Bridge.

Littleton Road Widening Project from Corbett Road to US 41: The project widens Littleton Road from the Corbett Road roundabout east to U.S. 41. The new road segment will include an 11-foot-wide travel lane in each direction and a 12-foot-wide center turn lane with landscaped planting islands. The project began in January 2024 with estimated completion in winter 2025. Project cost is approximately $20 million. The contractor is Wright Construction Group, Inc.

• Crews are completing final punch list items. Crews may be working close to the roadway. Motorists are asked to drive with caution.

• Motorists are advised that traffic may be heavy on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM and from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM due to Littleton Elementary School traffic. Expect delays. Please choose an alternative route if possible. Do not pass illegally or drive into oncoming traffic under any circumstances.

Ortiz Avenue Widening from SR 884 (Colonial Boulevard) to SR 82 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard): This project consists of widening of Ortiz Avenue from 2 lanes to 4 lanes and constructs a six-foot sidewalk on the east side of the road and a 10-foot paved trail on the west side of the road. An on-road bike lane on both sides of the road will also be included. New street lighting will be installed, and a grass median will separate traffic. No improvements will be made at the roundabout intersection with Hanson Street. The contractor will reconstruct the roadway with drainage improvements and stormwater management facilities. Work also includes installation of new water main and installation of new reclaimed water and sewer facilities for Lee County and the City of Fort Myers.

Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the work zone.

• The entrance to the Lee County Jail will be shifting approximately 300 feet to the south of the existing entrance. This change will take place overnight on Friday, February 6, 2026, beginning at 9:00 PM. The existing entrance will remain accessible while the new entrance is being prepared. Traffic will be stopped intermittently utilizing flaggers during the overnight activities. Motorists are advised to proceed with caution and follow the direction of flaggers and traffic control devices.

• From Monday, February 9, 2026, to Friday, February 13, 2026m between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, the entrance lanes into the Vistas at Eastwood Apartments and the southbound right turn lane from Ortiz Avenue into the apartments will be closed for crews to complete utility work. The lanes will be reopened at the end of each shift. During the closures, the exit lanes will remain open to traffic entering and exiting the apartments. Once the work in the entrance lanes is completed, the exit lanes will close during the designated hours, and two-way traffic will use the entrance lanes. Motorists are advised to proceed with caution and follow the directions of flaggers and traffic control devices.

• The Contractor will be performing utility work north and south of the roundabout.

• Crews are working on the new sidewalk and roadway on the east side of Ortiz Avenue. Pedestrians are advised that this area is an active construction zone and will remain closed until work has been completed.

• The existing pedestrian path between SR 82/Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and the Vistas Apartments will be closed until late February for utility installations. Pedestrians are advised to follow detour signs directing them to the alternative route that utilizes Alessio Drive.

• Motorists should expect heavy truck traffic entering and exiting the project area north of the roundabout.

• The contractor is identifying existing utility locations throughout the project.

• The contractor is scheduled to survey the project during daytime hours.

• LeeTran riders are advised of the following bus stop changes:

o The southbound stop just north of the Vistas at Eastwood Apartments entrance is being temporarily relocated to about 100 feet south of the entrance.

o LeeTran has installed a temporary northbound bus stop just south of the Lee County Jail driveway.

o The northbound AND southbound stops just north of the Lee County Jail driveway and the northbound stop near RaceTrac are temporarily out of service.

Able Canal Pathway Project: The project constructs a new 12-foot-wide, 6-mile shared use pathway along the north side of Able Canal starting at the Harns Marsh access point next to 35th Street West and the Sailfish Canal and extending east to Joel Boulevard in Lehigh Acres. The purpose of the project is to facilitate accessible, non-motorized travel options for commuters and recreational users in the Able Canal corridor and within the Lehigh Acres community. Work includes an asphalt path with a pedestrian bridge, pavilions, landscaping and other amenities.

TRESPASSING INTO THE CONSTRUCTION SITE IS DANGEROUS AND ILLEGAL.

Please be aware that the Lee County Sheriff’s Office

is authorized to charge trespassers if found in the work zone.

• Crews are constructing retaining walls near 19th Street West.

• Crews are constructing templates/work platforms, driving pile and pouring concrete for substructures during daytime hours for the new bridge over Charlie Diversion Canal.

• Crews are working on embankment, earthwork and storm drain installation between 35th Street West and Williams Avenue.

• Crews are installing erosion control throughout the project.

• Flagging and staging activity should be expected at Lehigh Acres Park, but there will be no impact to park users during construction.

I-75 at Daniels Parkway (exit 131) Interchange Improvements: FDOT is reconstructing the I-75 at Daniels Parkway interchange. The interchange improvements include reconstruction of the Daniels Parkway Interchange (Exit 131) converting it to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) design, reconstruction of the I-75 ramps, construction of pedestrian and bicycle accommodations through the interchange, installation of new signals at the ramps, and resurfacing of Daniels Parkway through the project area.

The following activities are subject to change based on weather conditions and unforeseen underground conditions:

• Crews will be working on earthwork and erosion control throughout the project area.

• Pedestrian access has been shifted to the south side of Daniels Parkway. Please follow signs and proceed with caution in the work zone.

• Motorists should expect trucks and equipment to be moving materials throughout the project.

• When necessary, motorists should anticipate lane closures on I-75 between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM and on Daniels Parkway between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM, with the exception of three hours before, during and three hours after Spring Training baseball games at Hammond Stadium and Jet Blue Park.

Three Oaks Parkway Extension Project Phase 2 from Indian Paint Lane to Daniels Parkway: This project consists of extending Three Oaks Parkway north in the vicinity of Indian Paint Lane to Daniels Parkway and constructs 4 lanes with a 5-foot-wide bicycle lane. Phase 2 includes 6-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides of the roadway.

Daniels Parkway:

• Friday, February 6, 2026, during the nighttime/overnight hours of 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM., the outside lanes will be closed for turn lane paving.

• Beginning the second week in February, Daniels Parkway will be open to three lanes of traffic in each direction. The outside east and westbound lanes will remain closed for additional construction activities. However, the outside right-turn lanes will be open for use.

• All work is subject to weather conditions.

Three Oaks Parkway Extension:

• The contractor is constructing the new roundabout for Fiddlesticks Boulevard.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution and watch for workers and construction vehicles entering and leaving the work zone.

Buckingham Road and Gunnery Road Roundabout Project Phase 3: Currently working in the third phase, crews will be working on the construction of the east side of the roundabout and Gunnery Road.

Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the work zone.

• Gunnery Road will be closed from Buckingham Road to Sunset Road.

o Southbound Gunnery Road traffic will be redirected via a detour to Buckingham Road, then turn left at Sunset Road, then right back onto Gunnery Road to continue south.

o Northbound Gunnery Road traffic will be redirected via a detour to turn left onto Sunset Road, then right onto Buckingham Road to continue onto Buckingham Road north.

• Access to and from Gunnery Road Christian Academy and Gunnery Road Baptist Church will be maintained at all times during the project.

• Motorists should expect intermittent flagging operations between 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

• Crews will be removing utilities along the east side of Gunnery Road.

• Additionally, temporary traffic signals have been installed at both the intersections of Buckingham Road and Sunset Road, as well as Gunnery Road and Sunset Road.

• Sidewalks will remain closed during this phase. Third Phase is anticipated to be completed Winter 2026.

• Crews are actively working on roadway construction along Buckingham Rd.

• As part of the construction activities for this project, sidewalk closures will be necessary. Pedestrians are encouraged to anticipate detours and make appropriate arrangements to ensure safe and efficient travel through the project site.

Expect large construction vehicles in the area and watch for contractors in the field. The contractors will use Variable Message Boards (VMB) to notify the public about any traffic pattern changes during construction. The contractor is V & H Construction, Inc. The project is expected to be completed in one year. Work is estimated to be completed in the spring of 2026. Work is expected to occur Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM; however, some night and weekend work may be necessary. Orange River Boulevard Sidewalk and Utility Improvements Project: The project includes water main replacement, installation of new stormwater drainage systems, addition of a new 6-foot sidewalk and curbs, and upgrading lighting and pedestrian signalization in the surrounding area of Orange River Boulevard from Palm Beach Boulevard (SR 80) to east of Lorraine Drive. These improvements will enhance water reliability and improve pedestrian and traffic safety.

Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the work zone.

• Crews will be working on utilities in the Right of Way (ROW) along the north and south side of Orange River Blvd. They will start at Lakeside Club Dr. and work eastward.

• The Contractor will temporarily close Boatways Rd. entrance adjacent to the Starbucks and the entrance south of the Comfort Inn will be closed for Utility work and sidewalk construction. Only one Boatways Rd. entrance will be closed at a time. Motorists should proceed with caution and follow the detour signs and directions from flaggers.

• The contractor is scheduled to survey the project during daytime hours.

Colonial Boulevard from Summerlin Road to McGregor Boulevard: Beginning May 12, 2025, and continuing through February 15, 2026, road construction and traffic signal improvements will be continuing along Colonial Boulevard at Summerlin Road and McGregor Boulevard. Construction crews will be replacing the sidewalks and pedestrian access in the areas, and detours will be in place. Expect nighttime lane closures starting January 14, 2026, with lighted work zones between the hours of 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM. The weather may affect start times and dates. Westlinks Drive at Commerce Lakes Drive, Commerce Lakes Drive at Gateway Boulevard, Westlinks Drive N at Daniels Parkway, Gateway Greens Drive, Devonshire Lakes Drive, Fairway Lakes Drive, Girl Scout Lane – Fort Myers (ROW 2024-00255): L & S Enterprises, contracted through FPL, will be performing the rest of the electrical work on the existing poles as well as installing new poles beginning May 27, 2025, and continuing through February 26, 2026. New poles installation, removal of old poles, resetting poles, and energize circuits for poles will be performed. Periodic lane closures on Gateway Boulevard, shoulder work/ flagging and sidewalk closures on Westlinks Drive just south of Commerce Lakes Drive, and shoulder work/flagging on Commonwealth Drive across from the elementary school will take place. Periodic lane closures/ flagging, shoulder closures and/or shoulder closures will occur from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. AWP will be conducting the traffic control services. Estero Boulevard from Crescent Street to Big Carlos Pass: Lee County is installing street lighting by all the crosswalks, replacing sidewalks that are damaged, and installing conduit systems to power the streetlights at various locations. Motorists should expect intermittent sidewalk closures and lane closures (Flagging Operation). Work will be during the day from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM for crews to install light bases and conduit/pull boxes.

Pedestrians should expect intermittent sidewalk closures and should follow detour signs.

Crews will be working in the following areas over the next several weeks:

• Estero Boulevard from Lenell Road to Estrellita Drive

5019 Lee Boulevard – Lehigh (RES2025-02426 & DRV2025-01926): ONX Lehigh Acres LLC will be performing roadway and sidewalk improvements beginning Friday, December 19, 2025, and continuing through March 20, 2026. Asphalt pavement, concrete sidewalk, concrete curbing, and drainage improvements will be performed. The outside (right) lane of eastbound traffic on Lee Boulevard just after Main Street will be subject to lane closures, as will one of two left turn lanes from the westbound portion of Main Street turning south onto Lee Boulevard. Periodic lane closures for eastbound and westbound lanes will occur between the hours of 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM on weekdays. Richmond Avenue over Able Canal, Lehigh Acres: Beginning October 1, 2025, Lee County and its contractor, Thomas Marine Construction, will begin reconstruction of the Richmond pedestrian bridge over Able Canal in Lehigh Acres. The project is expected to be completed by early 2026. This project, funded through the Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program, will provide a safer and more reliable connection for the community, particularly for students using the Lehigh Elementary Sidewalk. Construction activities will take place primarily outside of the roadway; however, pedestrians and motorists are encouraged to exercise caution when traveling in the area. Greenbriar Boulevard – Lehigh Acres: The Lee County Department of Transportation (DOT) is advising Lehigh Acres motorists to use caution and follow a posted detour on Greenbriar Boulevard. The road is closed from Redmont Avenue to Richmond Avenue due to an impacted culvert under the road. DOT maintains the road; the Lehigh Acres – Municipal Services Improvement District maintains the infrastructure under the road and will conduct the repair. DOT signage and barricades are in place.

15220 Treeline Avenue S. – Fort Myers (ROW2025-01627): Pavement Maintenance, LLC. will be performing roadway and turn lane improvements beginning November 24, 2025, and continuing through April 2, 2026. Improvements include baserock, asphalt pavement, drainage improvements, concrete sidewalk and concrete curb. The north and south bound lanes will be subject to periodic / alternating single lane closures. Lee Boulevard westbound between Alaska Avenue and Alvin Avenue – Lehigh (ROW 2025-01023): JJB South and 4M Services will be installing new turn lanes, sidewalks, and storm structure improvements off of Lee Boulevard westbound that leads into the 7-11 currently under construction. Work will begin on Friday, December 19, 2025, and continue through February 20, 2026. Asphalt pavement, concrete sidewalk, concrete curbing, and drainage relocation improvements will be performed. We will be performing this work at night per DOT requirements. The far outside westbound lane will require closure during the nighttime work hours and will be reopened each morning. 5600 Lee Boulevard Stonewood Crossing Development (ROW2025-02208) – Reliance Builders LLC and its subcontractors will be performing roadway work including overhead utility work on Lee Boulevard between Lehigh Acres western line and eastward to Alvin Avenue. The roadway work will include accel/decel lanes, catch basin/culvert pipe, curb and gutter, multiple drive entrances, sidewalk, turn lanes, waterline, fiber optic and traffic signal work. The improvements will begin (without lane closures) on December 15, 2025, and continue through March 31, 2026. Pedestrian Walkway Detour will be required along with periodic lane closures. The Westbound traffic on Daniel’s Parkway just after Rickenbacker Parkway will be subject to shoulder and lane closures. Hancock Bridge Parkway – North Fort Myers (ROW2025-02761): ITG Communications will be performing a fiber-optic installation beginning January 26, 2026, and continuing for approximately two weeks. The work consists of installing approximately 2,492 LF of 2″ HDPE conduit with fiber-optic cable using directional bore (jack and bore) methods from N Cleveland Avenue to the west on Hancock Bridge Parkway. A single travel lane will be subject to periodic closures during nighttime hours only (7:00 PM to 6:00 AM) in accordance with Lee County peak season requirements. Jacobs Drive (Island Park): Lee County Department of Transportation will be doing pipe replacement on Jacobs Drive from Park Road to Plumosa Avenue. The pipe replacement will be on the pipe between Jacobs Drive and Plumosa Avenue. We will have MOT set up for the duration of this project. There will be a temporary signal put in for one lane traffic flow, and it will operate 24 hours a day. The dates for this project will be January 26, 2026, to February 13, 2026. Corner of Palm Beach Boulevard and Kingston Drive, Fort Myers (ROW2025-02277): ULCS will be changing and upgrading power lines. The job will begin on Monday night, February 9, 2026, from 8:00 PM to 5:30 AM, and should not take more than two days to complete. There are two poles on the corner of Palm Beach Boulevard and Kingston Drive. For poles one and two, we would be able to work from the gas station parking lot. For the other 3 poles, we would need to close the westbound lane on Kingston Drive. There will be 3 flaggers in place to direct traffic around the work zone. City of Fort Myers will be hosting the Artfest Publix Run to The Arts 5K run on Sunday, February 8, 2026 from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The southbound lanes of the Caloosahatchee Bridge will be closed from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM. The closure will begin at Key Drive and run over the bridge and stop at Victoria Street. The run will start at Centennial Park in Fort Myers at 7:45 AM, run up onto the Caloosahatchee Bridge southbound lanes run north to the Lee County Park and turn around and run back. The bridge will be reopened by Fort Myers PD as soon as the last runner is either on the pedestrian walkway or on the off ramp. Ramp will remain closed until all runners have completed the run into Centennial Park area.

2. Bridge Maintenances

Matlacha Drawbridge: Work on the Matlacha Mechanical and Electrical Repair project commenced on August 25, 2025, and will be ongoing until Spring 2026. Workers will be intermittently present on the site but may not be seen for extended periods of time as work is required inside the tender house. While on site, motorists can expect to encounter construction workers and vehicles on the roadway, as well as deliveries and the removal of old equipment from the bridge. Please be aware that this is an active work zone, and drivers are asked to exercise caution when driving through the site. Midpoint Bridge over Caloosahatchee River: Lee County DOT and its contractor, Villafuerte Construction, will perform maintenance activities on the Midpoint Bridge. This project includes repairs to the bridge’s underside, substructure, MSE walls, and bridge deck. Starting on October 27, 2025, sporadic lane closures will be necessary.
