GPICA unveils new logo, new committees
The Greater Pine Island Civic Association unveiled a new logo and introduced the creation of new organizational committees during its August 2026 Membership Meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the First Baptist Church of Pine Island.
The colorful logo is designed to showcase a few of the Pine Island elements that the nonprofit organization has worked to protect since its inception in 1957.
“Our new logo features mangroves, mullet and a sunset view — just a few of the elements that make Pine Island one of Florida’s most distinctive communities,” said GPICA Vice President Nadine Slimak, who led the project. “The Civic Association has been working to protect the island from overdevelopment and working to keep native habitats intact, and we think our new logo showcases these efforts.”
The logo was designed by NRK Designs’ Bokeelia artist and graphic designer Nancy R. Koucky, a Pine Island resident since 2001 known for her distinctive artwork and support for local nonprofit organizations. She uses her graphic design skill to create a variety of marketing collateral for fellow islanders and their businesses and organizations, including logo design, ads, signage, menus, brochures and more. Over the last two decades she has had the opportunity to work with many island non-profits, creating everything from logos to banners for events.
“Working with Nancy was a great experience. She helped our board translate our ideas for a logo into an image that we think will represent us well,” Slimak said.
During the meeting, the GPICA also introduced two new committees:
∫ Membership/Outreach will be led by GPICA Board Member Kathy Chumley with the goal of developing strategies and conducting activities that will help increase local residents’ knowledge about the GPICA and its work within the community, ultimately helping to raise awareness of our local issues and residents’ role in addressing them.
∫ The Environment Committee will be led by GPICA Board Member Sue Dahod, who will work with committee members to develop strategies and conduct activities in support of the island’s environmental health. The Committee will have a particular focus on water quality.
The new committees join the GPICA’s existing Development Committee, created by the board in 2025 and led by GPICA Board Treasurer Steve Eldredge. The Development Committee acts as an island “watchdog,” staying abreast of new or changing development on the island and tracking other zoning-related issues so that residents are informed and can take action as needed.
The GPICA is also seeking members and local residents to join these committees and work to support and protect Pine Island and its environment.
“When I talk to people in the community, they tell me that they moved here because they fell in love with Pine Island’s coastal-rural character and natural environment. That’s the exact thing that the GPICA is trying to protect. But we can’t do it alone. We need our residents to join us in the fight to protect and preserve Pine Island, and these committees will give them a meaningful way to make a difference,” said GPICA President Christine Blum.
