After 37 days, countless challenges and more than 2,000 miles ridden through deserts, mountains, snow, rain, mud and extreme heat, Pine Island resident Dan Collard has completed his charity bicycle ride from Mexico to Canada in support of Retrieving Freedom, Inc.

Collared began his journey on May 7 near the Mexican border in Arizona and finished at the Canadian border in Roosville, Montana. Riding the Western Wildlands Route, he crossed Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana while carrying all of his gear on a loaded bicycle.

Along the way, he faced temperatures exceeding 100 degrees in Arizona, snow and freezing temperatures in the mountains, rough gravel roads, mud, steep climbs, wildlife encounters and several detours caused by trail closures and dangerous conditions. Despite the obstacles, he pressed forward with one goal: raising awareness and funds for Retrieving Freedom, Inc., an organization that provides trained service dogs to veterans, first responders and children with autism.

The ride also highlighted the kindness of strangers. Trail angels along the route provided meals, lodging, encouragement, replacement supplies and friendship when it was needed most.

Collard says those unexpected acts of generosity became one of the most memorable parts of the journey.

The trip generated strong support from Pine Island and beyond. As of this writing, supporters have contributed more than $13,061 toward the mission, with donations still being accepted.

Collard’s journey may be complete, but the mission continues. Funds raised will help Retrieving Freedom train and place life-changing service dogs with individuals and families who need them most.

Collard and his supporters would like to thank everyone who followed the adventure, shared the posts, offered encouragement and contributed to the cause.

Together, one bicycle ride is helping change lives — one service dog at a time.
