Braver Angels Southwest Florida invites the public to take part in a “lively and engaging debate workshop” on “Alligator Alcatraz.

The debate, which welcomes all community members regardless of political affiliation or background, will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, the Fort Myers Regional Library.

The format will be “an open but orderly debate” where each participant will speak for 3-4 minutes on their position either for or against Alligator Alcatraz, followed by questions from the audience.

“The goal is to promote civil discourse and mutual understanding of the other side’s viewpoints,” organizers said.

“Braver Angels is a national nonprofit dedicated to bridging the political divide and fostering respectful conversations across differences. Debate workshops are one of Braver Angels’ signature programs, designed not as competitions, but as collaborative experiences where participants learn to listen deeply, speak thoughtfully, and find common ground,” a release announcing the debate states.

Attendees will be invited to sign up to debate the question of whether deportation centers like Alligator Alcatraz are necessary and legitimate to enforce U.S. immigration policy.

“Attendees will explore the subject together through civil discourse, learning how to articulate their perspectives, ask honest questions, and build connections through constructive dialogue,” organizers said.

There is no cost to take part.

The event will take place in Conference Room ABCD (Back Building) at the library at
2450 First St, Fort Myers.
