The island social clubs perform many services for the community. Many of the clubs host several fund raisers each year and donate tens of thousands of dollars to charitable causes such as the Beacon of HOPE, FISH and the Pine Island Elementary School as well as many individuals in need of financial assistance. In addition to charitable acts, these clubs also serve as a place for members to meet, share ideas, stories of the past and plans for the future while enjoying a cold beverage on a hot afternoon. Among those who serve as bartender at the Pine Island Elks Lodge is Charles “Charlie” Stinson. Charlie and his wife Debbie have made their home in Bokeelia for the last four years and according to Charlie, he came to the island for the great fishing. As for his job at the Elks Lodge, he said, “It’s been great, I have made a lot of new friends and the conversations are always great.”
