MARIANNE PATON The owners and operators of Pine Island Cycles, David and Cindy Axler recently relocated the business to a larger facility on Pine Island Road and is now offer bicycle rentals as well as equipment for visiting babies on the island.

Moving just a short pedal away from their former location, Pine Island Cycles has recently expanded to offer customers more than bicycle parts and repairs.

Owner and operator David Axler moved his business from the island center in the Subway plaza to 5261 Pine Island Road and is now located across the street from the water company to answer the needs of a growing customer base. While still providing the highest quality of bicycle repair service, Axler has now expanded the business to include a variety of rentals. With the help of his wife Cindy Axler, Pine Island Cycles now offers rentals on baby items.

“We found there were a lot of people here on the island who often had grandchildren come to visit and needed special items that aren’t always easy to pack for a trip,” Cindy Axler said. “We thought with the additional space our new location provides would allow us to address this need and have decided to expand to include a few rental items specifically for small children.”

According to Axler, Pine Island Cycles now offers rentals on baby equipment which includes portable crib/play pens, highchairs, car seats and strollers. As the demand grows, so too will the items the Axlers will have available for rent including easy-up tents for family outings or for use at any of the island festivals. At this time, the Axlers also rent bicycles suitable for every age group from toddlers to adults.

Axler relocated to Pine Island from Massachusetts six years ago and is no stranger to cycling. With 20 years of experience, he successfully owned and operated two other bicycle shops in New England with seven employees and sold approximately 400 bicycles a year.

“The Massachusetts stores were very busy and I really enjoyed them, but now that I am here on the island, I am very happy to be in a small shop and service the people of Pine Island,” Axler said.

In addition to sales and service, Axler is an accomplished cycler. One of his major accomplishments involved a one-month, 1,000-mile ride from Washington State to San Francisco California. Another adventure took him into Canada when he journeyed from Quebec to Montreal. In addition to street cycling, Axler also ran the BMX race circuit and was sponsored by the BMX Team that placed first and second consecutive years in the Massachusetts State Championships.

He also has ridden mountain bikes in both cross country as well as down hill. Today, Axler’s racing days are behind him and takes pleasure in helping others to enjoy the freedom riding a bicycle provides.

“I enjoy sharing what I know with others who are interested in riding. I take the time to make sure their bikes are in good working order and that they are a good fit,” Axler said. “In the future, I also hope to organize a Bicycle Rodeo so that the kids can have fun learning about bicycle safety.”

Pine Island Cycles has many bicycles and accessories on hand and special orders are not a problem according to Axler. In addition, Axler will assist riders by performing routine tune-ups, tire changes, chain lubes and other services needed to keep bicycles in top operating order.

Pine Island Cycles is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 560-0320.
