CALUSA LAND TRUST The Calusa Land Trust is seeking participants for a work-fun party Oct. 10 at the Wigert-Barron Preserve in Bokeelia.

The Calusa Land Trust will open its season with a monthly work-fun party beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 10 at the Wigert-Barron Preserve in Bokeelia.

The focus will be on continued invasive plant stewardship and trail maintenance.

The community is invited to participate.

Cold beverages and a pizza lunch will be provided afterward.

Located east of the intersection of Barrancas Avenue and Aura Lane, the 32-acre preserve boasts three distinctive habitats: a rare coastal scrub environment, transitional uplands and a mangrove forest abutting Jug Creek. The former contains a thriving gopher tortoise colony. The upland has undergone a major, invasive plants removal project.

In addition, an informational kiosk, interpretative signs and trail markers have been added, which allow visitors to follow the Nancy Rogers Nature Trail and loop through the various habitats and view Rubye’s Pond, the alligator slide and Sara Schwandt bench along the way.

The Calusa Land Trust is an all-volunteer land conservancy that relies upon Pine Islanders to assist in the stewardship of its 2,400-plus acres of preserved lands.

Participants should wear appropriate clothing and bring work gloves and pruning tools.

For more information, contact Robert Ballard at 239-770-0070 or mrobertballard64@gmail.com.

The Wigert-Barron Preserve is at 7124 Barrancas Ave., Bokeelia.
