VFW to clean up, maintain flags
VFW Post 4353 in St. James City announced it would like to take on the clean up and maintenance of the flags on Pine Island Road, entering the island.
It is asking for donations to purchase new flags and stands, and it will create a replacement fund for future flag purchases. The VFW plans to purchase U.S. flags made in America for all six military branch flags, with custom flag poles. Financial donations can be dropped off or mailed to the Post.
Also, it has scheduled a clean up at 9 a.m. Oct. 10 to remove the old tattered patriotic signage and debris from the fence line. Those who would like to help should wear fishing boots as it is muddy. If the VFW has the new flags ready to install, it will do so; if not, it will install the flags when it does.
“This is not sanctioned by the county, but thus far they have been very lenient toward us showing our patriotism with the flags on the fence line,” it reported. “If we keep it clean, we feel the county will continue to allow this to happen.”
The Post is open from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
