First graders at the Pine Island Elementary (PIE) School learned about the American flag, its history and the etiquette of Old Glory on Sept. 23.

With the help of the Greater Pine Island Elks Lodge 2781, a group of veterans instructed the students.

Flags for First Graders has been a tradition for the Forty and Eight, which is part of the American Legion. For the last four years, first graders have learned about the various flags that have represented the United States since its founding and the importance of the proper respect and honor that the flag deserves.

Organizers reported the program is in keeping with the high standards that educate future generations on the patriotism that the country’s flag deserves.
