Oct. 6 Greater Pine Island Civic Association meeting to focus on fall ballot measures important to Lee County residents

PROVIDED
On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the Greater Pine Island Civic Association (GPICA) will focus on two ballot measures important to Lee County residents. The meeting is open to members and non-members alike.
The first item on the evening’s agenda is moving from at-large county Commission elections to single-member districts. The second item is focused on the proposed changes to the Homestead Exemption (Amendment 3).
Speakers during the GPICA meeting will be:
• Dr. Frank Alcock, a professor of Political Science & Environmental Studies at New College of Florida where he has taught courses on world politics, international law and environmental policy for the past 21 years. He’ll provide a non-partisan look at both issues and answer questions.
• Matt Caldwell, who took over as Lee County’s Property Appraiser following the retirement of 40-year incumbent Ken Wilkinson, will focus on the local impacts of Amendment 3 and what it could mean in reality for Lee County residents and also answer your questions.
GPICA has also invited the candidates running for the District 2 and District 4 seats on the Lee Board of County Commissioners to join the meeting and say a few words.
Incumbent Cecil Pendergrass, District 2, is facing challenger Elliot Taylor.
Incumbent Brian Hamman, District 4, is facing challenger DéMaria “Princess” Artis.
Commissioners Pendergrass and Hamman have said they are unavailable, but Taylor and Artis have confirmed attendance.
When/Where: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the First Baptist Church of Pine Island, 5363 Avenue D., Bokeelia, 33922.
