The Calusa Waterkeeper released the Fecal Indicator Bacteria (FIB) results from its sampling efforts on Sept. 15. Trained volunteers conduct sampling at up to 32 sites in Southwest Florida each month and it publishes the results to keep the public informed on potential risks. The Calusa Waterkeeper reported enterococci bacteria found in water can cause gastrointestinal illness, infections and rashes. Most of the locations it monitors are public access sites, like parks, boat ramps and kayak launches, that the state does not monitor. Florida monitors most popular beaches and that data can found on the state’s Healthy Beaches website. For more information, visit https://calusawaterkeeper.org/monitoring/.
