The Calusa Waterkeeper is partnering with Keep Lee County Beautiful to host a Marine Cleanup Event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Matlacha Community Park in Matlacha.

The Greater Pine Island Civic Association reported that during the annual event, volunteers will work to remove monofilament fishing line and other harmful debris from the water, shoreline and mangroves.

“Volunteers can participate by foot, power boat, jet ski or kayak to help keep our marine environment clean and help to improve the health of our local waterways,” the GPICA reported.

Single or tandem kayaks can be rented for the day for $22.50 from Matlacha Outfitters — across the street from the Yucatan restaurant. People can also launch personal kayaks from the site for free.

Kayak launch from the Matlacha Community Park is also free.

The GPICA noted that the tide charts say high tide is at 5 a.m. (+2.31 feet) and low tide is about 2:30 p.m. (0 feet), so volunteers will be on a mid-outgoing tide.

The Matlacha Community Park is at 4577 Pine Island Road, Matlacha.
