The Greater Pine Island Elks 2781 invites the community to take a stand against drug use by taking part in Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31. The initiative generates awareness about drug-related issues in the community and motivates parents, educators, business owners and local organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles.

“Red Ribbon Week encourages our entire community to adopt healthy, drug-free lifestyles,” Greater Pine Island Elks’ Drug Awareness Committee Chair Lisa Wade said.

The origins of Red Ribbon Week date back to 1985 when Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique S. “Kiki” Camarena was tragically killed by drug traffickers. In his honor, people in his hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons as a symbol of remembrance and commitment to fight drugs. The first official Red Ribbon Week took place in 1988, organized by the National Family Partnership.

Every year, the Elks National Foundation’s Drug Awareness Program (DAP) coordinates a national campaign, with the red ribbon symbolizing a pledge to reduce demand for illicit drugs. The DAP aims to unite parents, schools and businesses in the fight against drug use among youth.

According to the foundation, research has shown that children are less likely to engage in substance abuse when they have clear, consistent opposition to drug use from parents and role models, highlighting the significance of the initiative in fostering a drug-free environment.

To further engage the community, the DAP organizes contests that let students in grades 3-12 express their creativity and perspectives on drug awareness. The competitions include:

– Poster Contest (grades 3-5): Students create posters reflecting the annual theme.

– Essay Contest (grades 6-8): Students write essays exploring drug awareness and prevention.

– Video Contest (grades 6-12): Students produce short videos (30-60 seconds) that communicate the theme in an engaging and educational manner
