Breeze Athlete of the Month voting underway

Voting for the Cape Coral Breeze Athlete of the Month for October is now open.     

There were a number of top performances from student-athletes in The Breeze/Eagle coverage area and now it’s up to readers to decide who will earn top honors for the month.    

Nominees for October include:  

• Carley Himschoot, junior, Bishop Verot Vikings: The Vikings outside hitter helped lead a balanced Bishop Verot team to the District 3A-10 volleyball championship with 3-0 wins over both Gateway Charter and Oasis. Among her combined statistics for the two games were 19 kills and 13 digs according to MaxPreps.

• Hayden Tedhams, senior, Cape Coral Seahawks: The Seahawks captain helped lead the Cape High School boys swim team to the Lee County Athletic Conference meet championship with first place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle events. He also was a key member of the 400-yard relay team that came in third in the meet. 

• Skye Persechino, junior, Oasis Sharks: At the District 1A-9 meet, Persechino won the 200 free and 500 freestyle, and was also on the fourth place 200 medley relay team.

• Caelum Cragin, junior, Ida Baker Bulldogs: The junior wideout reached a season milestone in a loss against Mariner, eclipsing the 1,000-yard receiving mark on the year. Cragin had 7 catches for 79 yards and a touchdown, and also returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score. 

• Dylan Macias-Buenrostro, sophomore, Mariner Tritons: Macias-Buenrostro won the LCAC Championships boys cross-country meet with a time of 16:26, 22 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. 

• Derek Hooker, junior, Cape Coral Seahawks: The Seahawk quarterback had a big night against Ida Baker, going 10-for-18 through the air for 257 yards and four touchdown passes in the 48-0 win at home. 

• Jazlyn Forbes, senior, Oasis Sharks: The senior brought home another major victory, winning the FLrunners.com Invitational’s girls Race of Champions in Lake-land. Forbes crossed the line in 18:10.44, more than 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

• Jermaine Skinner, senior, Cape Coral Seahawks: The standout running back had a big game for the undefeated Seahawks in a 30-7 win over rival Mariner in the 39th annual Black & Blue Bowl. The senior accounted for 119 total yards and scored two touchdowns. 

• Alijah Touchstone, junior, Island Coast Gators: The Gator running back rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to Lemon Bay, also adding three receptions for 31 yards. 

• Eva Scribner, freshman, Cape Coral Seahawks: The swimmer had an outstanding meet against top competition, taking home a first place in the 200-meter freestyle at the Pirate Invitational and helping the Seahawk girls to a win. Scribner also played a key role in first-place wins in the 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
