Golfers compete in Chamber’s inaugural golf tournament

Early Saturday morning, about 43 golfers assembled at Alden Pines Golf Club for the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce First Annual Golf Tournament.
Sharing first place honors in this premier chamber event were Pat Flynn and Joe Griffin.
“The chamber is still recovering from the loss of our building several years ago,” board member Michael Gibbons said. “So this year these funds will go into our building fund. Next year though, we are planning to establish a scholarship fund with our second annual golf tournament.
“We encourage all business owners to join the Chamber of Commerce because it makes you a part of the community,” Gibbons continued. “If you’re doing business, you should support your community and this is one way to do it. Joining the chamber is a commitment.”
Sponsors this year included Tito’s Vodka, the Olde Fish House Marina, Winn-Dixie and LCEC.
“We have 12 sponsors total with numerous restaurants, local stores and hole sponsors.,” Gibbons said.
At the end of the day golfers were treated to a meal from Bubba’s Steakhouse chuck wagon.
Prizes were awarded for the first, fifth and 10th place finishes, along with closest to the pin and closest to the line.
In addition, a number of raffle prizes were awarded during the tournament festivities.
