Pine Island Little League closes season
The Pine Island Little League closed out its season Saturday morning with an award ceremony at Bobby Holloway Jr. Memorial Field.
“We are here today to hand out the end-of-year trophies to all of the kids that participated in Little League,” league president Billy Gay said. “We are celebrating a very good year and we’re looking forward to a bigger and better year next year. The Bobby Holloway Board has expressed an interest in working with us to bring more kids out for Little League next year.
“I want to welcome everyone here today,” Gay said. “We have a trophy for every child that participated in this year’s Little league. I also want to thank all of our sponsors, we couldn’t have done it without you.”
This year’s team sponsors are: Domino’s, York Road Marine, VFW Post 4353, Pine Island WOTM 1843, Kiwanis, Lion’s Club, Bobby Holloway Jr. Memorial, Cambio Dermatology and Elks Club 2781. The banner sponsors are: Lion’s Club, Four Winds Marina, Kiwanis, Alden Pines Country Club, Melville G. Brinson (attorney at law), Bobby Holloway Jr. Memorial Fund, Pine island Moose Lodge 1954, Gatewood Custom Carpentry, Pine Island Realty, Elks 2781 and Greater Pine Island Water Association.
“This year we were short coaches and had some additional help from Eddie Barnhill and his wife Jaymie who became ‘Team Mom,'” Gay said. “I would also like to thank Shane and Sherri Dooley and Wendy and Eddie Mills.”
He then recognized all the coaches, team moms and sponsors for the six teams including the T-Ball teams.
“Today we have a special plaque for Ernestine Squires,” Gay said. “The Bobby Holloway Foundation makes a lot of this possible so thank you very much Ernestine. We also have a plaque for the ‘Coach of the Year,’ that would be head coach of the Cubs, Eric Wold. And the Mareese Harden Award goes to Heather Ramming.
“In all we had about 50 kids this year,” Gay said. “Next year, with the help of the Holloway Board and the Eagle, we will do better.
