To the editor:
I beg to differ with Joanne Salmon (Word on the Island, 3-8-17 Eagle) who thinks Pine Island needs a better grocery store.
Winn-Dixie is a great example of a local branch of a large corporation. Dan, the manager, takes the time to get to know the islanders and is always ready to lend a helping hand to local groups. The staff is very competent and friendly and we rarely have to wait long in the check-out line. There is a wide variety of choices in all departments (the produce department just keeps getting better and better, the bakery and the deli have an outstanding array of delicious things). Thank you to all departments: you do a very good job!
Joanne, perhaps you're not a year-round resident and haven't taken the time to know the store and the staff a little better. I think you'll be surprised. Everyone I know is happy that our Winn-Dixie store doesn't have a big city attitude and doesn't treat everyone like a face in the crowd.
