Baltimore's Joey Mitchell coming to Bert's Bar and Grill

October 16, 2013
By ED FRANKS (efranks@breezenewspapers.com) , Pine Island Eagle

Mark your calendars! Between gigs in St. Petersburg and Key West Joey Mitchell and Swampcandy will make two appearances at Bert's Bar and Grill. This high-energy band will perform Saturday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m.

Mitchell and Ruben Dobbs form the duo that is Swampcandy, an American roots/delta blues-influenced duo that sounds like a full band.

"Joey Mitchell plays kick drum while beating, plucking, bowing and popping his upright bass. Ruben Dobbs plays percussive finger style steel resonator and acoustic guitars while crooning, wailing and moaning out the real blues with his unmistakable voice. They've been compared to Tom Waits, The Black Keys, Son House, Hank Sr., Lowell George, Scott H. Biram and Jorma," according to ReverbNation.com

Swampcandy's foot-stomping rhythms of Mississippi Blues and multi-genre music creates an eclectic mix of stage presence and great music.

Then on Oct. 27, from France, on his U.S. tour , Tomcat Blake will be performing at Bert's. Blake is a blues musician known for his countless influences blues, country, rockabilly and soul.

"Whether acoustic, electric, solo or with a band, whatever 'style' he shares rather than claims the almost endless influences that have shaped the originality of his style. A style anyone can identify with ... It all ends up with one goal, 'transmit the feeling.'"
