The 5th Annual Early Bird 4th of July BBQ will be held at Woody's Waterside this year with a special benefactor, Helping Paws Animal Sanctuary.
Charlie Kuchler, otherwise known as Yard Dog Charlie, said this is the first year food, supplies and money will be collected for the animal shelter during the event.
Since his wife Deb, who is very involved in rescuing and placing abandoned pets in homes, has become friends with Maunie Miszewski, CEO of the sanctuary, they decided to donate funds to the sanctuary as well as collect items. Kuchler said they will be collecting food, both canned and dry, as well as supplies, such as scoopable cat liter, treats, paper towels, trash bags, bleach and cleaning supplies for the shelter. Gift certificates to Publix, Petsmart, Discount Pets, pet Supermarket, Walmart and Winn-Dixie are also welcome.
He said everyone who donates food, supplies or money will receive a raffle ticket.
"Since it is a no-kill shelter, the cost of food and supplies can be overwhelming," he said. "I'm looking forward to helping a local Pine Island animal shelter."
Kuchler said if someone cannot make it to the actual event, they can donate food and supplies at Woody's Waterside from now until the event on July 4.
