Pine Island water fluoridation — vote no

November 28, 2012
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

If fluoride eliminates tooth decay, why are there so many dentists?

Denise Oakes-Lottridge says that as a mother and dentist she approves fluoridation. Most of the information touted by dentists is old and outdated. If you remember, mercury and thalidomide were the next best thing to sliced bread!

How can you, as a mother and dentist, recommend adding hydroflurosillic acid (fluoride), which is labeled "hazardous material" to Pine Island's water? How can you as a mother and dentist recommend anything with fluoride added to it? Toothpaste contains the warning "Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If swallowed get medical help or contact the Poison Control Center." And, by the way, the water marketed as "purified baby water" contains fluoride. Fluoride is a main ingredient Prozac. Maybe it's added to the water to quieten the babies.

Instructions on the label state "use for preparing baby formula, drinking, diluting juiceand mixing with cereal." Even the ADA states "don't give fluoride to babies." Is it any wonder that attention deficit disorder, autism, etc., are running rampant.

The small town of Mayo, Fla., is .08 square miles with a population of 988 in 2004 and must have been a lot less when you worked there. There is a very small percentage of children and a high poverty level (probably meaning poor nutrition, education on dental hygiene, etc. All leading to tooth decay). Recent reports indicate no difference in tooth decay between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities/countries. In fact, the evidence shows the same decay or less in non fluoridated areas.

Thousands of well-known scientists, doctors, engineers have all agreed that hydrofluorsilic acid is a toxic chemical and that is one of the reasons that seven unions of the EPA filed a suit for a moratorium on fluoridation of water. They have proved that fluoride causes many, many health problems running the gamut.

There is big money to be made in selling fluoride to communities, after all, the aluminum and pesticide companies cannot dump their product anywhere in the country or in the water without huge fines from the EPA. So why not sell it to water companies? China is very happy to sell its fluoride toxic waste to the USA.

There is big money for dentists because of the damage done to teeth by fluoride. Why did teeth whitening start? Fluorosis of the teeth leaves them discolored and mottled - hence lets whiten them. Do you think there is any harm in the products used for whitening?
