First tropical storm of the season stalls fishing
Last week wasn’t the best for fishing, with our first tropical storm of the season, Andrea, churning off the coast of Southwest Florida leaving all but the most hard core anglers in safe shelter. The few reports I did hear noted really good fishing despite some wind and rain.
Strong southwest winds brought some very high tides in Pine Island Sound that resulted in good action on snook and redfish along shorelines where wind and current were pushing water.
Redfish to 30 inches were caught on a variety of offerings including shiners, pinfish (live or dead), cut ladyfish and Berkley Gulps. In Matlacha Pass, similar catches were reported in the southern pass near the power lines.
Shore-bound anglers found good action mid-week at Blind Pass that’s separates Sanibel and Captiva, where the snook bite was very good, plus trout and a few pompano.
Offshore, before the winds picked up, red grouper up to 13 pounds were found off Redfish Pass in depths from 80 to 120 feet. Further out in the 120 to 150-foot range American Red Snapper were caught along with a few big black grouper.
Last week wasn’t the best for fishing, or any outdoor activities for that manner, but our first storm of 2013 is behind us and now we can resume to our regularly scheduled fishing.
