Next month’s roster of activities at Pine Island Public Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:
ADULT
“Pioneer, Go Home!”
Read Aloud at the Pine Island Library, 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 11

Join the staff and special guests as they read from Richard Powell’s hilarious novel “Pioneer, Go Home!” Powell was a resident of Fort Myers and his book was inspired by the origins of our very own community of Matlacha.
Civil War Times:
The People’s Favourites
6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9
With the soft scent of magnolia blossoms wafting gently on a southern breeze, the tart plunk of the banjo and one of Stephen Foster’s best-loved melodies, Hard Times Come Again No More, Suzanne and Jim transport you back to America in the mid-1800’s. Hear the sentimental side of life during America’s most turbulent trial, the melodies that civilians and soldiers sang to leave strife behind: O’ Susannah, Some Folks Do and Home, Sweet Home. Sponsored by The Friends of the Pine Island Public Library.
Computers 101
10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 11
This is a two-hour class for people new to computers or with limited computer skills. Apple or Windows users can benefit from this class. Topics covered will include the uses of the computer for writing and organizing in the home. Also covered will be use of the Internet including researching and buying on the Internet. Facebook, YouTube and other Web services will be reviewed. Safety and security habits and risks to watch out for when using private or public network connections will be discussed. Email systems both web mail and local mail will be discussed. Sorting and storing of photos and documents and the online backup of these items will be explained along with computer selection, purchase and maintenance.
Bees Alive!

This program consists of a live demonstration hive with a queen bee. The importance of bees in agriculture, as well as the different classes of bees and their functions will be discussed.
Rock Around the Clock: Music of the 50s and 60s
6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23
Enjoy great music of the 50s and 60s performed by David Kilbride. Sponsored by the Friends of the Pine Island Public Library.
Book Discussion: Octavia E. Butler’s “Kindred”
1:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24
Dana, an African-American woman in 1976, is suddenly transported to the antebellum South in the 1800s to save a boy, Rufus, from drowning. She later learns that this white boy is meant to have a daughter with a slave named Alice. This daughter, Hagar, is one of Dana’s ancestors. Dana soon discovers that she is called to Rufus any time his life is in danger. She feels it is imperative to continue saving his life so that her ancestor can be born. Each time the stay grows longer and more dangerous until it is uncertain whether or not Dana’s life will end, long before it has a chance to begin. Ms. Butler gives the reader a glimpse of life on a plantation’s slave quarters in this fast-moving story.
Technology and Your Library: Download Depot and Use of E-Readers

Bring your e-reader or other device and join this two hour class. Using electronic materials from the Download Depot will be demonstrated and procedures for finding, checking out and downloading various items will be explained. The various methods for reading, listening and viewing electronic materials will also be discussed along with a demonstration of using e-readers and computers.

Family Storytime

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes. Registration is required.
Out of My Hands Juggling!

Lights! Magic! Juggling! Black lights, strobe lights, rings, balls and clubs displayed in many colors are all part of the special effects in this interactive show. Add a few magic tricks and juggling to music and it’s sure to delight and amaze audiences of all ages.

Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading, during the allotted time. A total of $8 per day may be earned. For ages 18 and younger. Coupons may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only. Please bring your library card.
