“Fabulous Fossils of Florida”
The Museum of the Islands (MOTI) is presenting a program titled “Fabulous Fossils of Florida” on Monday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Fishers of Men Lutheran Church, 10360 Stringfellow Road, St. James City. The featured speaker will be Bill Shaver, president of the Fossil Club of Lee County.
Shaver will describe the many large animals that roamed throughout Florida thousands of years ago. As Robin C. Brown says in the book Florida’s Fossils, “Florida’s 50 million year old fossil history contains some of the most fascinating land and sea animals that every lived…exotic sharks and whales, huge mammoths and mastodons, fierce cats with nine inch saber teeth, vampire bats and giant sloths.”
Shave will show some of the fossils he has found in southern Florida. The fossils include those of mammoths, mastodons, rhinoceros, glyptodonts, extinct snakes, dire wolf, black bear, camels, bison, lions and ancient horse. Most fossils range in age from 10,000 years ago to several million years.
The Fossil Club of Lee County has a membership of over 150, all of whom enjoy the hobby of collecting fossils and exploring the many aspects of paleontology. To learn more about the club, visit its website at fcolc.com.
