Children giving to charity
Children and adults alike can benefit from the act of giving to charity. It is a great way to help children understand how blessed they are. But, how do you teach a child about charity? One very effective way is to set an example. Parents have a model behavior they hope their children adopt as their own. And this is what has happened for the Palmeiro family.
When Jessica Palmeiro was 23 years old, she had her hair cut and donated it to ‘Locks of Love’. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Therefore Jessica’s daughter, Kya, had an example to follow and wanted to grow her hair long enough to donate to Locks of Love. Kya’s hair was trimmed often to keep it healthy in preparation for her donation. She did not have to wait 23 years like her Mom. This year at age 5, Kya donated her hair to ‘Locks of Love’ at the annual Breast Fest 2010.
Kya’s mother Jessica tells us that, “she has also donated her toys and clothing to a family last year who lost their home in a fire. She thrives off being generous and giving, and we thank ‘From Our Hearts’ for the opportunity to teach her yet another lesson on giving and caring for others in need.”
Breast Fest is sponsored each year by the From Our Hearts organization to raise funds that are used to provide Breast Cancer Care in our local area. The ‘Locks of Love’ is an activity provided at Breast Fest and Kya is the youngest volunteer to donate her hair.
Kya was blessed the day of Breast Fest, not only was she recognized on stage for her charitable act; she also had the closest guess of jelly beans in a jar and won the Breast Fest Youth Prize, a new bike.
