FISH to clothe kids for school
The annual FISH (Fellow Islanders Sending Help, Inc.) “Clothes for Kids” drive is now under way. Many parents of school children are experiencing financial distress and may not be able to afford new clothes for their youngsters. If parents wish to receive this assistance, or if Eagle readers are aware of children who should be included on the list, please call Peg Harmon at 283-3874 or Mary Jo Roane at 283-7862.
Last year, 88 children received new clothes for their first two days of school. We’re predicting that this year’s list of recipients will be about the same. Those who wish to contribute to the program may do so by “adopting” a child for this purpose, then purchasing clothes for that specific youngster. Peg or Mary Jo can provide the age, size and gender of each child, along with suggestions of items to buy. Usually, each child receives a pair of pants (or a skirt), a pair of shorts, two shirts, underwear and socks.
FISH will furnish $20 gift certificates from Payless Shoe Stores for each, as well as purchasing clothes for any who are not “adopted.” Fortunately, last year 80 percent of the children were adopted. Another means of support for the program would be to send a check to FISH Basket Brigade, P.O. Box 357, Matlacha, FL 33993.
We’re grateful to Fire Chief Dave Bradley and his staff for once again agreeing to serve as the drop-off point for clothes purchased by our adopters. The cut-off date for requests is Aug. 12, to allow time for shopping, distribution (and exchanges, if necessary) prior to the first day of school, Aug. 24.
For further information questions may be directed to Mary Jo or Peg at the phone numbers shown above.
