Bokeelia resident opposes House Bill One

1 min read

To the editor:

I am moved to write in opposition to HB 1 (House Bill One), as I feel it infringes on my 1st Amendment rights. This springs from information learned about the true meaning for folks wishing to express themselves freely without penalty. Unnecessary and blatantly political, HB 1, needs to be stopped now. Is there any justification for:

1. A felony offense occurring when a road is blocked by more than nine peaceful demonstrators.

2. Denying bail to protestors.

3. Allowing the killers of protesters to escape liability from civil lawsuits.

4. Damaging Confederate statues punishable by a 25-year sentence.

5. Disallowing the use of police funds to fund mental health.

I think there is much opposition to HB 1 here in Lee County as I listen to the voice of the voters committed to peacefully exercising their first amendment rights. I raise my voice in the hopes that the House Justice Committee will end this Bill now.

I do oppose violence and mob rule, such as displayed in our nations Capitol by Trump supporters on Jan. 6th, and all violent behaviors.
