Trump is responsible for attack on the Capitol Building

2 min read

To the editor:

On Jan. 6, our nation’s Capitol Building was attacked by an armed mob for the first time in history, a mob ready to kill the vice president and the Speaker of the House. They almost succeeded. Five people did die, including a Capitol Police officer. Yesterday, NPR reported that 230 of the mob members have been charged with crimes. Sadly, two Capitol Police officers killed themselves afterward.

Who is responsible? The person who told them to fight and then did nothing to stop the violence. That person is Donald Trump. He was impeached in the House and tried in the Senate for inciting insurrection. This is not the first time a person no longer in office was tried in the Senate, and legal experts agree that it is in fact constitutional.

Should we just let them get away with it? Not if we are a country of law and order. Not if we believe everyone needs to follow the rules. Not if we want to prevent this from ever happening again. That applies to the guy who is responsible as well.

Imagine what you would do, how you would feel if an armed terrorist group broke in while the Senate was in session, seeking to harm and kill our duly elected representatives. You would want them locked up along with their leader! Well, that’s just what happened. These people tried to take over the government in a violent coup! They are all terrorists and must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If not, we might as well tear up the constitution and throw it away.

I thank you!
