To the editor:

Former president Marie Cahill of the Matlacha Civic Association ordered the dolphins 20 years ago from a company in North Carolina. They originally had blue lights with a white belly and a red hat, but over the years they needed to be refurbished. Mike Gordon and his committee — John Barone, Bill McKee and Jim Young — sandblasted, repainted and rewired them with white rope lights. The Lee County Electric Company has been volunteering the use of their bucket truck to hang the dolphins every year, and we appreciate their cooperation.

This has been a difficult year and we hope that seeing the appearance of the dolphins on the bridge will bring a sense of normalcy to the Matlacha community and raise some holiday spirit. In addition, watch for further information on the lighting of the second annual Matlacha Christmas tree and year 35 of 2,400 luminaries glowing throughout the Community.
