It’s time to be a patriot

2 min read

To the editor:

I am a Detroit Lions fan. That gets me sympathy in a lot of places. The quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is really a great quarterback. He’s got some good players around him. Often, games come down to the last couple of minutes in the fourth quarter. Stafford marches his team down the field to either win a nail-biter or go down miserably. But win or lose, we love Detroit, are loyal to Stafford, and love the game.

We love watching the Steelers, the Saints, the Seahawks, the Rams, the Raiders, the Buccaneers, the Browns, the Bears, the Packers and even the Patriots. We love the league and the game. So it is with this election and this country. Sometimes you have  to lose to the Patriots. You don’t just say you hate the game. You try to identify with their fans and put yourself in their place. They are happy they won, but they don’t hate the Lions’ fans. They love the game, too. In this way, we are all Patriots.

We are in the midst of a global pandemic that threatens our health, our economy and our hospital systems. Biden won. Trump lost. Move on. Time to be a patriot and get on board with getting this country healthy, working and on a winning game plan. We can only do this by coming together, letting go of the idea that the other team’s fans are evil and that the other team’s quarterback is going to ruin everything. They are not. By working together, we will all be able to love our country, demonstrate our patriotism, and achieve the healthy, productive future we all desire.

Thanks!
