Friends of Pine Island Library cancel December book sale
To the editor:
The Board of the Friends of the Pine Island Library made the difficult decision to cancel our December book sale at the Pine Island United Methodist Church. The logistics of holding a book sale during a viral pandemic were too challenging to overcome. We hope to hold a sale in February and will make that decision in January.
Book donations are not being accepted at this time and the community is encouraged to place books into the Little Free Libraries (LFL) on Pine Island. There are four LFL in Bokeelia (downtown at the curve on Main Street, the Palms, at the corner of Stringfellow and Pomegranate, and at Pine Island Elementary), and two in St. James City (York Road and off 5th Avenue).
The Pine Island Library reopened last month after a 7 month COVID closure. The meeting room has not reopened for public use. Friends are meeting via Zoom for book discussions and for membership meetings, next scheduled on Nov 19. There will not be a meeting in December. Friends’ merchandise, such as T-shirts and notecards are currently not available at the library.
During the library’s closure, some of the flooring was replaced, a partial acrylic partition was installed at the desk and furniture was removed or rearranged to promote social distancing. Newspapers and magazines are not available because they are considered “high touch” items. Patrons are asked to use the self-checkout machine and are encouraged to remember social distancing guidelines when browsing the library. Please wear a face mask to protect yourself and others.
