On Trump
To the editor:
On Christmas Day 1998 at 0400, the commandant of the United States Marine Corps set out to distribute cookies and hot chocolate for those Marines in and around Washington, D.C., who were lucky enough to pull duty on the birth of my Savior Jesus Christ. One of his first stops was USMC Base Quantico, Va. Upon walking into the Command Center, Gen. Charles C. Krulak asked a lance corporal a very simple question. “Who is the Officer of the Day?” The lance corporal replied “Sir, it is Gen. Mattis, Sir.” General Krulak asked the same question again and received the same answer.
Upon further review, the commandant of the Marine Corps would learn why every U.S. Marines respectfully referred to Gen. Jim Mattis as “The Marine’s Marine.” This is what Mattis did on Christmas Day. “General Mattis learned of a young officer who was scheduled to have duty on Christmas day had a family. General Mattis decided it was better for the young officer to spend Christmas Day with his family, and so he chose to relieve a junior officer and take his duty on Christmas Day.”
I met 2/Lt Jim Mattis in 1970. There are some people in this life you never forget. General Jim Mattis is a living American hero. This is his take on the current president of the United States of America:
“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.”
