Personal morality cannot be legislated

4 min read

To the editor:

Our nation has continued throughout its existence to achieve and strive for equality, prosperity, peace and the personal freedoms guaranteed under our Constitution and The Bill of Rights, at times imperfectly, but always with the guidance of our forefathers’ wisdom.

Todays “liberals” are far different than those of yesteryear and have coined new phrases in attempting to legitimize their ceaseless attacks on ordinary citizens trying to raise their families, run their businesses and enjoy the “American” way of life that they’ve built for themselves. “Systemic racism” is one of the latest terms that no one seems to question because if you do, you’re labeled a racist. Racism, in any form, should not be tolerated but no form of racism can be legislated from existence as it lives in the hearts and minds of people based on their experiences or what they think they know about those of another race. There is no such thing as “the thought police” but there are many liberals eagerly assuming that role and unfortunately, they are provided a much larger stage by the mainstream media than just the ordinary folks who had no idea they were “deplorables” and “racists.”

The litany of liberal criticism knows no bounds when it comes to our president, our Florida governor nor any person daring to oppose their socio/communist views. Income “inequality” means that some people make more or less money than others, but income “equality” is what Cuba, China, North Korea and Venezuela have.

How many of their citizens would love to trade places with anyone living inside our borders just to have a chance to prosper and live their lives without the foot of their government on their throats?

“Police Brutality” and “Defund the Police” are currently popular phrases employed regularly by the libs as though it’s an every day occurrence that began without the brutality by the criminals. Police respond to criminal behavior, they are not turning our streets into war zones, that would be the responsibility of ANTIFA, BLM and the anarchist faux revolutionaries burning, looting, rioting, destroying business and creating fear and chaos in the cities run by Democratic “leadership” that invites them in.

Before you scream “police brutality,” I’d like to suggest that any one of our local overzealous reactionaries ride along with a police officer on a Friday or Saturday night and face down a drug addled convicted felon on parole charging the car with a weapon drawn screaming at the top of his lungs that he’s going to kill you and he’s not going back to prison. Then tell us about bad police behavior and how “militaristic tactics” saved your life after your “shrink” treats your PTSD.

The response of our Administration to COVID-19 has been trial and error and a lot of on-the-job training as it has been a surprise gift to the world, compliments of China.

Our Bill of Rights states in part that “all powers not specifically granted the U.S. Congress by the Constitution are reserved for the States or the People.” Many individual states have opted to create their own response to the Chinese virus and some of those responses have fallen far short in terms of results.

The World Health Organization, according to www.health.com, estimates that influenza claims between 290,000 to 650,000 lives each year globally and the CDC estimates deaths in the U.S. from the flu averaged between 12,000 to 61,000 annually since 2010. Nowhere in the stats were disclosed the number of people that contracted the flu, just the terminal cases.

Our local critics scrutinizing every move our governor makes in response to the virus should be glad they live here instead of New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts or Connecticut where the death rate per 100,000 population as of Aug. 5, 2020, according to Statista.com, was 168, 179, 126 and 124, respectively. Florida stood at 34 deaths per 100,000 population. Which one do you think is better?

It’s not likely that our country will ever achieve total perfection nor that people around the world will ever declare that racism is wiped out forever.

Honestly though, would any of you trade places with anyone living in a country where the government controls, through deadly force, every single move you make for your entire lifetime? Please, let’s not take our country for granted.
