America’s ‘teetering on oblivion”
To the editor:
Are most Americans not reasonable? Will most people use their own common sense to protect themselves and others? Will some not adhere to government suggestions to control Covid-19? Of course! People do immoral, unlawful deeds all the time.
Do mandates or laws stop those who will jeopardize your life and liberties? Not always. Must all citizens be cast as stupid, needing mandatory guidance, based on those few who are stupid?
Our civil liberties are in jeopardy. Allow any government body to infringe on those liberties and it will never stop. “Give them an inch, they take a foot.” Democratic governors are a perfect example in this COVID-19 pandemic. They have instituted ridiculous mandates so that many will heed “herd mentality.” This is an effort to see just how far they can go in their effort to control. We must reject this effort. Free will and decisions you make are your responsibility and therefore, your consequences. We all take risks because that is the nature of life in everything we do. Should we stop making our own choices and allow some government agency to control us? Would we ever go to the moon again, dive to the bottom of the ocean, risk our lives researching dangerous viruses?
Reasonable people have the God-given right to make decisions as supported and defined by our Constitution.
What is reasonable about being allowed to fish from your boat of choice but prohibits using a motor? (I may have a full tank of gas, fishing equipment and all things necessary without having to visit any store.) Should I still be not allowed a motor on my boat based on this premise? Am I worried about a traffic accident, while pulling my boat that would overwhelm hospitals? How about a perfect driving record? Can I not decide for myself?
I must stay 50 feet from another boat but only 6 feet from another person. What is the rationality behind this?
I cannot buy a hunting or fishing license to get food for my family, yet I can buy liquor, weed and lottery tickets. Support the state with taxes from these revenues; yet allow the economy to sink further with extended mandates. Is this the plan?
I cannot buy plants or seeds to support my food sources even though I may honor the 6-foot rule of distancing, facemasks and cleanliness.
During the quarantine, I cannot buy any “non-essential” building materials to keep myself occupied during the time I am “sheltered in place.” If I am staying the distance, wearing my facemask and following reasonable protocol, what is the danger? Some say length of time in the store. What if I am not a “shopper” but only a buyer? I know what I want and get out as soon as I can, which has always been my pattern.
I can go to a beach and stay the distance of 6 feet yet my boat must be anchored 50 feet from another boat. Does this make sense?
I cannot go to my vacation home in my own state for what reason? What if I do not have to make any stops, have plenty of food and supplies to take with me and drive carefully, as I always do. Traffic is now a fraction of normal. Do people going to the grocery store or pharmacy not get into car accidents?
Getting fined up to $1,000 for sitting in my car alone in the desert, taking a drive alone in my car or distancing on a beach or being forbidden to be on my own private beach!
Not allowing church services in a car, with windows rolled up. Allowing only 10 people to attend church services in a congregation that holds 300 even when social distancing and safeguards are adhered to.
Closing all restaurants with the exception of carryout even when outdoor seating and distancing is available.
The greatest country in the world is teetering on oblivion. Stand up for your rights. Stay healthy, be responsible and vote!
