Our elections should be free from foreign interference

To the editor:

The assault on democracy seems relentless these days. The latest, the intelligence briefing to lawmakers that Russia is again interfering in our elections on Trump’s behalf, is another crushing blow. If there is any institution that is sacred to democracy, it is that of the voice of the people expressed through free and fair elections.

If we have no free elections, we have no democracy. Trump is reportedly angry over this briefing. He has consistently undermined U.S. intelligence service’s findings that Russia interfered in the last election, and has cast blame on everyone from a “400 pound man in a basement” to Ukraine. McConnell has refused to let election security bills, passed by the a House, to be heard in the Senate. Election security budgets have been underfunded.

Former CIA Director John Brennan says we are now in a “full-blown national security crisis.”

Regardless of political affiliation, the overwhelming majority of Americans support secure and honest elections, free from foreign interference. It is time to demand our government support them, too.
