We must not flinch from the task at hand

To the editor:

“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.” – Thomas Paine

Paine called for moral courage at the beginning of the American fight for freedom from the British, and these times call for the same.

This era requires courage of all ? citizens, Congress, news media, military and all public servants, we, and they, must not flinch from the task at hand.

Those of us who are former military officers took a pledge to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

The Constitution does not say we might want to impeach in these circumstances. It demands we impeach when the evidence is clear. It is a duty.

There is extensive proof that this president has betrayed the Constitution and all of us by calling for foreign interference in our elections, using his office for both pressure against a political adversary and for personal financial gain.

It is a tragic truth that the country must deal with a corrupt presidency. We all must steel ourselves as the truth flows out, and take the action that protects our democracy.
