Protection for life-saving medical treatment status ended
To the editor;
The Trump Administration has eliminated a protection that lets immigrants remain in the country while their children receive life-saving medical treatments. This affects families with children fighting cancer, HIV, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy and other life-threatening conditions. Families have notified that their legal status has been terminated and been given 33 days to leave the country.
A Citizenship and Immigration Services spokeswoman said the policy change was effective Aug. 7.
This is a literal death sentence. It is the most aggressive act the Trump Administration has taken so far. This is an act committed in our name — in the name of the United States — a nation once possessed of high ideals, honor and compassion. It is time to speak out and contact our elected representatives. Regardless of one’s opinion on immigration, it is a step too far to command that sick children be deported to certain death. Congress can act to prevent this.
