Politikos
To the editor:
My recent visit to the opening reception of the Politikos exhibition was an eye opener since I was able to view current social and political issues in another perspective. Those who plan to attend the exhibit before the presidential election, be cautious of the propaganda art that is used in all the mediums to persuade your political idealogy. The Politikos exhibit depicts social and political issues through visual art. Artists use art as a weapon to convey messages on current issues that affect American lives.
Among the exhibits, the art installation stood out for me because the public gets involve in the art creation. Primate Party at the Podium! is the name of the participatory installation by Pat Collins. Silhouette monkeys made out of cardboard seem to hang from paper links of new year resolutions. You as a participant can write your favorite slogan or campaign promise on a brown strip of paper. Later this strip of paper with your writing is linked to the rest of the paper chain that is hanging from the ceiling. Since 2016 is the year of the monkey and it also coincides with the presidential election which suggests a correlation between resolutions made at the beginning of a new year and promises made by political candidates. Which, if any hold up?
The Alliance for the Arts at 10091 McGregor Blvd., in Fort Myers, has the Politikos exhibit that runs until Nov. 5, 2016. We are fortunate to be able to experience this exhibit just before the upcoming election. Go an enlightened yourself in the local art scene, especially when it is free.
