Another gas station

To the editor:

Having noted from the Pine Island Eagle dated Aug. 10 in the “Word On the Island” section, the question asked was “What, If anything, do you think Pine Island needs?” You’ll see that three of the five respondents stated that we need another gas station. This is indeed a fact.

Just the other day I stopped by the only station on the island only to find a lineup of cars and trucks 2-3 deep waiting to get fuel. This wasn’t during the lunch hour or rush hour for people going to work. I did note that there were several work trucks in line, probably doing construction with the recent construction increase. Folks, this is the off season. Can you imagine what it will be like when the season hits?

It is also of interest to our residents that a few years back a prominent businessman here on the island attempted to obtain a permit to build a gas station on the empty lot next to the American Legion. This man is a successful builder and knows how to get things done. Who would have thought that the County Commissioners would not grant approval for this construction? It is a perfect location and the land is already zoned commercial.

Also of note, these same commissioners who are supposed to be looking out for our best interests are up for re-election.
