Islanders need to continue Phil Buchanan’s work
To the editor,
I was shocked and saddened, as were many, by the passing of our great Pine Island guardian, Phil Buchanan.
It is with a heavy heart I write this letter. Many are familiar with his integrity and consistent hard work, and his dedication to the causes affecting Pine Island.
He will be missed beyond words. Many saw him as our leader and voice to the outside politicians who buy up the land and want to develop it.
Phil lead the way with his expertise by helping create and promote the Pine Island Plan.
He opposed devastating development that would destroy the water in the estuary around these delicate islands and negatively affect the way of life.
He loved and took care of animals, as well.
The last thing Phil would have wanted us to do is give up on these issues he worked so hard to defend.
Phil’s last efforts were involved with promoting people who are running for office, like Dick Anderson and John Scott, who care about Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve estuary and want to preserve it.
Getting out to vote is our right and duty. Get registered. Get your absentee ballot. Many decisions are made in the primary.
In Phil’s honor, today make a commitment to continue his work in any way possible.
His plans started from the hope, effort and commitment of a single man, everything worth fighting for does.
Now, together we can work to defend our estuary and stand up for what we care about.
In Phil’s name, don’t give up hope.
It’s just one small step at a time.
