Missing the point
To the editor:
Just one more short letter concerning Elisa Fasulo’s dilemma with the Sheriff’s Depart-ment here on Pine Island and school crossing lights, etc.
I really feel for her and believe other writers to the Eagle are completely missing her point here! I too have been stopped on our island for various reasons over the years. I must say, I am appalled and disturbed by how aggressive and threatening some of them are! They oftentimes charge up to your car window abusively yelling at you, before you even know what the driving infraction is. It is quite scary and frightening I must tell you.
Before Hurricane Charley, we had two sheriff’s cars on the island. They were helpful, respectful and caring. These traits were much appreciated by us Islanders.
Since August 2004, we now have some six sheriff’s cars on the Island per shift. As our island is 17 miles long, etc., we are a shooting gallery at a carnival! Seems we have no courtesy and respect from said officers. Courtesy and respect ,in fact, “breeds courtesy and respect.” As Thomas Davis letter points out, a feeding frenzy by many officers on our island, etc.
I’d like to point out also that at night, they frequently pull up, and rush up on passing cars bumpers, and tailgate them for some distance, thus spooking people. Many women have complained of this, although not to the head sheriff.
In closing, be it known that Pine Island is a peaceful and law-abiding community. The officers (six cars per shift) know that this is a gravy train for them here, as opposed to Dunbar, M.L.K. Boulevard and Lehigh Acres, etc.
Thank you all.
