Buyers beware … get a second estimate

To the editor:

We have owned property on Pine Island since 1994 and try to utilize Pine Island businesses whenever possible. It is the right thing to do and it helps insure that these providers will continue serving the islander’s needs.

However, I would caution everyone who is getting work done, to get a second opinion or price. In the spring we installed some cabinets in our dining room, which cost about $1,200. We requested an estimate for Wilsonart countertops from a local company. They were too busy to get back to us with a price before we left for the summer. When we arrived back here for the winter, we were advised that the price would have been $1,386 in May, but now the price in October is $1,536. Since that was more than the price of the special order cabinets, we checked with Lowe’s. For the same exact product, right down to the same product code … $682, installed. Are you kidding me?

As a retiree and just one using common sense when budgeting our money, we can’t justify $854 more for the same exact product! So buyers beware, and get a second estimate before spending your hard earned money.
