A special thank you to the St. James Hobby Club

To the editor:

The board of directors wants to express a big “thank you” to the St. James Hobby Club, which, for so long, has served our community, providing members the opportunity to be creative, enjoy fellowship, and learn new skills.

The original St. James Hobby Club raised funds to purchase the land on the corner of Lemon Avenue and 4th Street.

We recognize as time goes on, things change, members come and go, and the interest for one program may ebb. The club is considering ending its historically popular programs due to lack of attendance or leadership.

Over the St. James Hobby Club’s 50-year history, the members have: crocheted, knitted and quilted lap blankets for nursing home residents; crafted stuffed animals, pillows and small blankets for children in the hospital; sewn bags that fit on the back of wheelchairs; supported Beacon of H.O.P.E. ministries to the homeless, donated socks, hand-made blankets, hats and scarves; created special pillows for breast cancer patients; compiled toiletry bags for the Women’s Abuse Center in Fort Myers; contributed to F.I.S.H. and the Pine Island Food Pantry; collected back-to-school supplies for children of Pine Island Elementary; helped the school by saving Campbell Soup coupons; aided a graduating senior with a college scholarship; contributed aluminum tabs for the Ronald McDonald House (as of June 2011, over 3,918 pounds); and honored members who have passed away each Christmas with a place on our Angel Tree.

Whether we come together to clip coupons, make cards, cross stitch, scrapbook, knit, crochet or just visit, we come because we care about each other, our community, and don’t want to miss an opportunity for “catching up.”

For this, and more, thank you.
