Meeting a member of the ‘Greatest Generation’

1 min read

To the editor:

Spending some time at the local Moose Club with my friend, Dave Manion, I met Ed Snyder, a World War II Air Force veteran who served with the 466 Bomb Group. He flew some 33 missions as a part of the U.S. 8Th & 15th Air Forces over Nazi Europe as a bombardier in the B-24 Liberator.

Ed, now is in his mid 90s, had some stories about his missions, but instead let me read a book by Martin W. Bowman called “B-24 Combat Missions First Hand Accounts of Liberator Operations over Nazi Europe.” After reading some of the stories in this book I now know why they are called the “Greatest Generation.”

Ed is a pleasure to talk to about many diverse subjects. He is a Pine Island resident and may be found either at the Moose, American Legion or VFW – but not all in one day.
