The smoking lamp

3 min read

To the editor:

Veteran members of Post 136 know what the smoking lamp is. Lighting and extinguishing it might be a sensible alternative to the rude, and illegal move to ban smoking at the post.

To ban smoking divides people in a social setting. That social setting is far more important than a little secondhand smoke.

It is a post, not a bar, lounge or restaurant. However, we have relinquished control of the post to those activities and now play host to what has become a majority of non-veterans. I believe this contingent of customers has attempted to influence policy. They should not attempt to influence policy at the post, as they are guests. They would be polite guests if they made it their policy to entertain veterans at other local watering holes. Where the price is higher. It’s nice when one hand washes the other.

Reading retorts I notice one mistake in particular that tells me the mover of the motion is being influenced by the lobbyist from outside groups. It is not a majority, Sister Goodwin, it is a plurality. Which brings into play the illegal, malfeasant and criminal behavior in this move to ban smoking. First, the motion needs to be in writing and read at three meetings in order to be legal. Second, it must be mailed to every member, to be legal. And most importantly, an unsigned “Notice” of free membership to vote to ban smoking is malfeasant. It is not nice to bum rush a vote. To the mover of the motion, I say rescind it. To the board, I say cancel the vote. To the membership, I say vote this motion down.

Post 136 is not a health club. Caring for a veteran’s health might be best expressed as Brother Lewis suggested, a smoking cessation class. A health class, or a change in menu. “Marguerita Monday” is a big hit. But healthy? Hmm? Smoking pales in comparison to cheap tequilla and fried beef.

We might wake up and smell the coffee, if it were served at meals. Coffee or tea aids digestion, but try and get a cup. Exercise might help a few veterans. P.T.! Good for you! Good for me!

But more importantly, having “Clean Well-Lighted Place,” as so aptly described by Ernest Hemingway, is the short story so titled. I suggest the fellow who did not get my point, read it. Too bad we have no library.

The smoking lamp is still lit. Smoke if you got ’em!

Vote no!
