Vote against RV Park request

2 min read

To the editor:

I am a resident of Pine Island Cove in St. James City, a resident owned Homeowners Association of over 750 members. Our community abuts the 57-acre tract of land that a developer has requested a variance for in order to construct an RV Park (campground). I am respectfully requesting that you vote against this variance request for the following reasons:

– This project will have a negative impact on the value of our homes as well as those of the neighboring association known as Pine Island Village.

– This proposed development, Windjammer Resort, which is adjacent to our community will only detract from the area’s pristine natural habitat.

– This project will represent the kind of encroachment of use that will be destructive to the character and integrity of the residential environment.

– Although the developer states that he has plans to sell all of the sites to RV Owners, if that does not occur then he is at liberty to rent sites out on a weekly or monthly basis to whoever has a camping trailer, thus turning the property into a KOA type of transient park.

The Greater Pine Island Civic Association, Pine Island Village, and Pine Island Cove Homeowner’s Association have all voted overwhelmingly to oppose this project for at least the reasons stated above. We have absolutely no problem with this project moving ahead as a multi-family development, which it is presently permitted for. We knew when we moved into our community that at some point a housing development may become a reality in that area. However, never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that our elected officials would allow a campground to be approved for that area. In terms of a variance request, such a change would represent a huge leap and is totally unfair to all of us who are already here.
