Exercise opportunities available at St. James Civic Association

To the editor:

Recently, Diane Cherella of Bokeelia wrote to the editor suggesting that a Curves-like facility might be opened in a vacant building owned by her and her husband suggesting the “women of Pine Island deserve a gym.”

While that is true, and I certainly wish Mrs. Cherella well in her efforts, the fact remains that over the years I’ve seen many types of activities come an go, from yoga to pilates to aerobics to group exercise, but they as well as Curves have all had to deal with the fact that our island is not only thinly populated but is highly seasonal. Moreover, when you add in the fact that our population is a bit older than most and many people have need for exercises tailored to our particular age group and limitations (e.g. stretching, balance, non-impact exercises), the problem of making a business of it becomes evident. Maybe as our island grows the process will become easier, and it’s a great idea.

Fortunately, there is no shortage of opportunities for exercise on Pine Island – for men as well as women. For 10 years the St. James City Civic Association has offered exercise classes open to the public, to both members and non-members, and to men and women of all ages at a nominal cost of a few dollars per visit with drop-ins welcome and without any contract or obligation other than a good attitude and a wish to exercise with your fellow Pine Islanders.

Classes are open mornings (four) days a week all year long, and our instructor Jodee does a great job of keeping the class fun and interesting. I’m happy to say I’ve been a regular attendee of these classes and while they do not involve machines or a gym setting, they offer a positive benefit, both social and physical and make exercise rewarding and fun.

For information call Jodee Nelson at 239-283-4790, and I hope you will join our group.
